Practicalities

Steep hill on the drive: In very icy conditions the road to the house has one steep hill that can be difficult to climb. We plough the road consistently after snowfall but sometimes road sand is needed. Should you have difficulty there is a box at the top of the hill full of gravel and a shovel that can be used to gain traction. Alternatively, you can park at the bottom of the hill on the side and walk approximately 0.8km to the cottage.

Hot Tub: The wood-fired hot tub is available at no extra cost although it does need to be filled and heated which takes in total approximately 6 hours. It is very important to make sure the tub is completely filled before lighting a fire (otherwise the stove will break). We have very clear instructions and are able to assist you if necessary.

Conservatory: Please note that the conservatory is not heated during the winter.

Respecting The Neighbourhood: We are committed to responsible hosting and respecting our local community. We kindly ask guests to keep noise at a considerate level to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for everyone. To support this, the property is equipped with noise monitoring devices that measure sound levels only. Your privacy is fully respected.

Toilet: please note that there is now a brand new water-flushing toilet installed inside the bathroom.

Location

Lohja

Pähkinä is located in Lohja, Southern Finland, a region known for its lakes, orchards, and peaceful countryside just an hour from Helsinki. The property sits near Lake Lohjanjärvi, surrounded by forest paths and quiet roads ideal for walking or cycling.

The nearby town of Lohja offers shops, restaurants, and cafés around its historic centre, along with attractions such as the medieval Church of St. Lawrence and the Tytyri Mine Museum. In summer, local swimming beaches, farmers’ markets, and lakeside cafés make the area lively, while autumn brings berry picking and calm forest trails. Mustikka’s setting combines the ease of city access with the calm rhythm of Finland’s lake district.

From The Owner

When my parents, Liisa and Håkan, bought this land in 1991, it was nothing but dense forest and a swamp. My mother, a biology teacher with a deep love for nature, dreamed of creating a place where forest and garden could live side by side. Together, my parents cleared the ground, built the lakes, and planted the gardens that still surround Mustikka and Pähkinä today.

Mustikka was finished in 1996 as our family’s summer home, and nearly twenty years later, Pähkinä followed, built for us, their grown children, to return with our own families.

After my parents passed, my husband Timo and I wanted to carry their vision forward. We renovated both houses, restored the gardens, and brought light and warmth into the interiors, always keeping in mind the same care and dedication my parents once had for this place.

These homes mean a lot to us, and I hope you feel the calm and beauty that drew my parents here all those years ago.
